Chapter 12

I wake up early on Sunday and eat a quick breakfast alone before taking a shower. When dressing, I opt for a simple T-shirt and shorts, so I won’t stand out if I make it back to my own time. I’m trying not to dwell on that half of the day, but it’s a rumbling cloud on the horizon that can’t be ignored. I write a quick note to my great-grandparents, claiming there was an emergency with my mom that I needed to rush back to Alabama for. I thank them for their hospitality and put all the cash I have in the same envelope. This is placed beneath my pillow. I plan on telling Gloria about it before passing through the gate.

With my preparations out of the way, I quietly slip outside and wait at the end of the driveway until Daniel’s car arrives. When it does, I climb inside and stare, because his appearance has changed. The hair that is usually swept back and to the side is now hanging loose, the bangs long enough to touch the top of his cheekbones while framing those gorgeous eyes of his.

“You always wanted to see it down,” Daniel says. “I figured this might be your last chance.”

I lean close, intending to kiss him and run my fingers through his hair, until I remember that we can be seen. I don’t want to put him at risk. Especially if I won’t be here to protect him. Fuck. This is going to be rough.

“Take me home,” I say, leaning back. “You look so damn beautiful that I don’t trust myself here.”

I reach for his hand, needing some sort of contact, and when this isn’t enough, I rest my head in his lap again. Daniel strokes my head during the ride. I take his hand to press it to my lips. Of all the thoughts running through my mind, few are sexual. That’s not a good sign. All I can think about is what our life together might have been like if I could stay .

“Nobody is home, right?” I say as we walk inside the house.

When he nods and shuts the door behind him, I don’t waste any time. I kiss him, sure, but I also hold him tight, not wanting to let go again. When I pull back, I notice his glum expression.

“Don’t be sad,” I plead. “Not yet. Come on. I know what will cheer you up.” I take his hand and lead him to the dining room. “I’ll play you a song. Anything you want. What’ll it be?”

Daniel smiles at the offer, which is flattering in itself. “Oh umm… I don’t know. What sort of music do you like? Is it much different in the future?”

“A little.” I sit at the bench, Daniel walking around to lean against the piano’s body so he can watch me. “You want a preview?”

“Yeah!” he says, perking up.

“Okay. Man, where to begin? The sixties are coming up and that means… The Beatles!”
